DIY Natural Advent Wreath

reading time: 2 min

To me, an Advent wreath is one of the simplest ways to bring the Christmas spirit into your home. This isn't your typical red and green Advent wreath but one with a neutral colour palette and some gold and red detail. You could use this tutorial on a hanging wreath, too!

This is actually the very first Advent wreath I DIYed at home, but I'm actually pretty pleased with the way it turned out. What do you think?

You will need:
  • 1 willow wreath ring (e.g. this one) or wire wreath frame
  • 4 candles or tealights
  • cinnamon sticks *
  • dried orange slices *
  • star anise *
  • mini pinecones
  • wire, fish line, or yarn for attaching the embellishments
  • wire cutter
  • optional: artificial berries, greenery, mini baubles, ribbons, twine, burlap, walnuts...
  • optional: 4 candle holders (alternatively, use double sided tape or hot glue)

* I actually used a potpourri mix!

Make it:

Step 1)

Attach one end of your wire to the wreath ring so you can't see any from the front.

TIP: If you don't add any greenery to the wreath, the wire will be visible, so be mindful of the colour of it.

Step 2)

Attach the embellishments to the wreath generously by using pliable wire, fish line, strong yarn, or even a hot glue gun (for the smaller items such as the pinecones, artificial berries and tealights if using – I only used wire though).

TIP: Be careful not to place any items too close to the candles, otherwise they might catch fire!

Step 3)

Wrapping the wire around the wreath base cover the entire wreath ring with your ornaments, or until you are happy with the look. In my case, I originally wanted to keep the wreath completely neutral, so only cinnamon sticks, cones, nuts, and orange slices. But while I was putting together the wreath, I decided it would look even better with some touches of red and gold. Oh, and some blue ribbons (silver or gold would look great, too).

TIP: For a more fancy look, you can cover the entire wreath with a few layers of gold metallic spray paint!

Step 4)

Add the four candles, one for each week of Advent. I like to use either white, red or golden candles because these colours seem most festive to me. If you like, place a white pillar candle in the centre of the wreath to light on Christmas.

And that's it! We're done!

Now your family table will be aglow with simple, natural beauty this holiday season :)
